Novelista indio. Chatterjee se educó en Calcuta (ahora Kolkata) y se desempeñó durante varios años como juez de causas menores en el servicio civil. Su primera gran obra bengalí fue Daughter of the Lord of the Fort [La hija del señor del fuerte] (1865). Un hito en la historia de la prensa escrita india es el periódico de su propiedad; Bangadarsan donde publicó por entregas algunas de sus últimas novelas. Aunque sus obras fueron criticadas por sus deficiencias estructurales, sus contemporáneos lo vieron como un profeta, y sus valientes héroes hindúes despertaron gran orgullo y patriotismo. Ayudó a crear la tradición novelística en India y a consagrar la prosa bengalí como lengua literaria. Chatterjee es considerado el más grande novelista bengalí.
